The theatre experience does not have to stop at the end of the performance! Watching a play together creates a common experience that family members can bond over. It offers a unique opportunity to enhance family connections though sharing emotions and engaging in discussions about the performance. Check out the following discussions, activities, and other outings you can do at home or in your community to connect more with the themes of this family-friendly activity of Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Musical!

Family Comic Strips

Enhance storytelling skills by creating your own comic strip stories. This activity helps children understand the importance of narrative structure while also expressing themselves.

  • Download one of these comic strip templates:
  • Choose a theme and have everyone draw their own comic strips based on that theme.
  • Themes could be anything from “the best vacation ever” to “the story of a superhero”.  Themes could even be things that can be hard to talk about, such as “a time I felt scared” or “When the angry monster takes over my mind”.

Share your stories and enjoy each other’s creativity!

Decorate a Diary (or should we say JOURNAL)

Greg keeps a journal to write down all his thoughts and feelings, and you can too! Take the cover of a notebook and turn it into a statement about yourself!

  • Gather old magazines, construction paper, markers, scissors, glue, stickers, or whatever you have to decorate the font of your journal
  • Look for pictures, words, and phrases that represent the many parts of you.
  • Cut out the images and words carefully.
  • Arrange and glue the cutouts onto the construction paper to create a colorful collage.
  • Have children describe their journal covers and how the colors, shapes, words, or decorations reflect their own unique personality.

Celebrate what makes them unique and encourage them to use the journals on their own.

DIY Puppets

Bring the characters of Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Musical to life with your own DIY puppets! This activity not only encourages creativity and self-expression but also develops fine motor skills as children cut, color, and assemble their puppets. They can use these puppets to reenact favorite scenes or create new adventures for Greg and his friends, highlighting themes of friendship and creativity in the musical.

  • Gather materials like paper bags, felt, or old socks.
  • Cut out shapes for eyes, mouths, and clothing from colored paper or felt.
  • Use glue or tape to attach the facial features and accessories to the puppet.
  • Encourage children to put on a puppet show, using their creations to tell a story inspired by the musical.
