About the Show
Bilbo Baggins enjoys a comfortable and predictable life in his cozy Hobbit Hole. He has no interest in danger, dragons, or adventures of any kind. But when Gandalf arrives with a company of dwarves, Bilbo is unexpectedly recruited to help them reclaim their homeland and treasure from the dragon Smaug.
Far from everything familiar, Bilbo encounters trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and the mysterious Gollum. With every challenge, he becomes more resourceful, compassionate, and courageous. But as the company draws closer to its goal, Bilbo discovers that defeating a dragon may not be the journey’s greatest test.
To protect his friends and remain true to himself, this unlikely hero must decide what is truly worth fighting for.
Themes & Takeaways
Bilbo does not begin his journey believing he is brave. His courage develops each time he moves forward despite uncertainty, makes a difficult choice, or places the well-being of others ahead of his own comfort.
Along the way, Bilbo learns to understand people whose experiences are different from his own—including the dwarves who have lost their home and are determined to reclaim it. Their adventure explores friendship, belonging, and the importance of helping others while also asking what can happen when pride, anger, and the desire for wealth become more important than compassion.
The Hobbit reminds audiences that courage is something we practice, character is revealed through our choices, and even the most unlikely person can make an extraordinary difference.
Spotlight on Mental Health
New experiences can feel overwhelming, especially when we are unsure of ourselves. As Bilbo travels beyond the safety of home, he faces fear, uncertainty, and moments when he questions whether he belongs on the journey at all.
Through problem-solving, supportive relationships, and growing confidence in his own abilities, Bilbo learns that he can face difficult situations without becoming someone he is not. His adventure encourages young people to trust their strengths, ask for and offer help, and recognize that bravery can begin with one small step forward.
